s Countdown is on for the Vissla Sydney Surf Pro World Surf League (WSL) Qualifying Series (QS) 6000 on Manly Beach with an exciting array of events planned onshore to coincide with the excitement on the waves.

With 6,000 QS points up for grabs, some of the world’s best surfers will be in attendance as they look to kick off their 2018 campaign in style when the event gets underway from 24 February – 4 March. In addition to the QS components of the Vissla Sydney Surf Pro, a WSL sanctioned Pro Junior event will also take place on the opening weekend of the 24 – 25 February.

In addition to the numerous surfing heats that will be battled out on Manly Beach, there will be entertainment, food, activities, exhibitions and displays throughout Manly with a packed, daily program at Hotel Steyne.

More than a dozen local businesses, including COVERED., are backing the event and being awarded naming rights for the trials and the opportunity to promote themselves to a global audience.

At the launch of the event at Hotel Steyne, a major partner in the surf event, John O’Neill, chairman of Surfing NSW, said, “We are super excited about the event this year.”  He said that with surfing making its debut at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, everyone involved in the Manly event had access to a global platform through coverage of the event.

He described the Hotel Steyne as an extension site of the competition, hosting live screen coverage of the heats as well as playing host to a number of events and activities each day throughout the competition.

A beach festival including a ‘Hall of Surfing Fame’ a VW Kombi Rally and various other activities will run alongside the surfing heats.

Manly MP James Griffin, described by John O’Neill as being ‘instrumental’ in getting the event staged in Manly, thanked the businesses for “putting their money where their mouth was and demonstrating real community support”.

Local clubs the Queenscliff and North Steyne Boardriders will select surfers to be involved in the junior trials with 13-year-old, Manly surfer Winter Vincent, who won the 2016 Australian Open of Surfing U14 and is part of Queenscliff Boardriders, being  selected as a wildcard for the pro junior title, along with Saxon Reber, 14, from North Steyne Boardriders.
