Surfing couple Murray and Kara Bothma grew up on the Northern Beaches surfing from a young age as the pair developed a passion for catching waves, building campervans, and road tripping the east coast of New South Wales.
COVERED. caught up with these surfer grom mentors, to find out what they love about marriage, surfing and living on the peninsula.
Meeting at a local youth group, Murray and Kara started dating as teenagers and have been chasing dreams together ever since.
Lovers of surf breaks from Bower to Queenscliff, the couple and a group of friends recognised the need for positive influences for groms in the Manly surf community.
In 2012, they launched Christian Surfers Youth in Manly with a committed team of volunteers, to mentor and create a community space for local groms in early high school.
“We had a lot of fun with night surfing, surf trips, and local events as well as sharing what a blessing it is to know God,” says Murray.
In December of 2015 they celebrated their wedding with an all outdoor ceremony and reception at their favourite Northern Beaches locations.
“We had our wedding ceremony at Manly Dam and an outdoor reception at Oxford Falls Peace Park, it was an incredible day celebrating our love with family and friends,” says Kara.
A priority within their marriage is cultivating friendship by spending time with one another.
“We love doing life together, supporting and motivating one another. Our faith in God helps us to love each other selflessly,” says Kara.
Both studying education, Murray high school and Kara primary, the couple started their own campervan and 4WD fit-out business, Abe Shapes.
“We really enjoy the challenge of working with small space design, making a van feel like a home, Kara does the design and styling and I build it,” says Murray.
When asked where they can be found on the weekend, Murray explains, “On Saturdays, we can be found longboarding at our favourite local spots, like Bower, Freshie, Queensie or North Steyne, playing beach volleyball with a group of friends and dinner at our place.”
“Manly Life Church on Sunday is the highlight of our week, where we meet with an amazing community and see God transform lives.”
