The Artifex motto of ‘Made local, Made to Last’ refers to every piece of furniture that leaves the workroom in Roseberry Street where they have been making fine furniture for more than 20 years. Already established as fine furniture makers who design and craft individual pieces to order, Artifex extended its appeal by offering a range of furniture that is still made with the utmost skill but is ready to buy.
The furniture is on show at the Studio One shopfront on Roseberry Street. This is the original business site and where the furniture they create is still crafted by three master furniture makers.
“We make all the furniture by hand and it’s the quality of each piece that sets us apart,” explains Caroline Miller, client liaison at Studio One by Artifex.
Artifex Interiors was formed by business partners and Master Craftsmen, Anthony Sergas and Scott Lander in 1995 and has a strong and loyal following of interior designers, fine furniture retailers and direct customers, in the commercial and residential sectors.
Their pieces are made from exquisite timber species such as Oak, Walnut and Tasmanian Blackwood, often incorporating metal, glass and stone with the promise that they are built to last. Caroline says, “We often get customers who ask us to refinish the tables we made for them 15 – 20 years ago and they go back looking brand new. We can do that because of the solid timber and because they’re constructed to stand the test of time.”
Artifex was winner of the Best Free- Standing Furniture category in the 2017 Furniture Industry Association of Australia Awards and is one of three finalists in the same category for this year.
The business strives to be environmentally aware. All timber used is sustainably sourced, off-cuts are made into chopping boards or wooden toys with the smaller end pieces being bagged up for firewood. Other pieces are made into timber samples available to take home and see how it will look in situ.
With the ability to craft fine furniture becoming something of a dying skill, Artifex takes on apprentices to train them in the art of fine furniture making.
“We make furniture that is durable and has longevity. They are pieces that can be handed down through families,” adds Caroline.
Whether you want one statement piece to add that extra something to your home, or quality furniture that will last, pop into Studio One by Artifex today.
