Sporting groups can look forward to a new synthetic sports field on the peninsula.

Northern Beaches Mayor Michael Regan says this second synthetic pitch at Cromer Park, on field 2, will help meet the growing need for more sporting facilities in the area.

“With one synthetic sports field already located at Cromer, the installation of an additional FIFA certified pitch will provide sporting groups on the Northern Beaches with a first class facility while increasing sporting capacity on the Northern Beaches,” he says.

Once completed, this will be the fifth synthetic sports field on the Northern Beaches. The others are located at Cromer 1, Forestville War Memorial Playing Fields and Narrabeen Sports High School.

A sustainable approach to the design has identified reuse and recycling opportunities.

As part of a recycling drive, surplus topsoil will be reused at St Matthews Farm Reserve, Cromer and Reub Hudson Reserve, North Curl Curl for sports field surface improvements.

The infill rubber, sourced from recycled vehicle tyres, is certified to international quality standards. In addition, synthetic fields require less maintenance as there is no mowing, no water and no fertiliser required.

Mayor Regan adds, “It improves sporting capacity across the Northern Beaches and provides the community with an additional premium quality sporting facility.”

The new field is planned for completion in readiness for the 2018 winter season.
