NRL greats strap on ice skates to raise funds for Leukaemia

What do you get when you cross a bunch of ex-NRL legends and an Ice Rink? An event you do not wanna miss. COVERED. finds out why these sporting greats are supporting such a good cause.

A host of former NRL superstars, including Manly Sea Eagles’ Steve Menzies and Cliff Lyons, will be strapping on the ice skates at the Australian Ice Hockey Classic at Qudos Arena in Homebush this month, to raise money for Leukaemia.

Confirmed for the Saturday, June 17 game are; Steve ‘Beaver’ Menzies, Cliff Lyons, David ‘Wolfman’ Williams, Nathan Hindmarsh and Josh Perry, who will compete in a series of challenges on the ice, in between periods at the USA
vs. Canada ice hockey game.

“The whole point of the exhibition is to raise money for the Leukaemia Foundation and sell tickets to the Matt Clark Shield memorial game which will be played at Macquarie Ice rink on July 1,” says charity match organiser, Mark Gibson.

“This is an opportunity to tell the huge ice hockey crowd about our charity game in July, and gives them a chance to cheer on some famous NRL guys, have some fun in an ice hockey environment, and maybe win some great prizes.”

Narrabeen teen Matt Clark passed away from Leukaemia in 1995 when he was just 18-years-old. A charity match has been played for a number of years in his honour.

“The support we get, especially from local sports people like Steve Menzies,
is amazing,” says Gibson.

“‘Beaver supported the event last year when he filmed a video for social media and delivered a signed NRL jersey to an auction winner.

“This year he’s going one step further by pulling on a pair of ice skates.”

“You could say I’m a little nervous,” laughs the ex-Manly second rower. “I think my kids can skate better than I can. But I’m looking forward to supporting a great cause, raising money for the Leukaemia Foundation and drumming up interest for the Matt Clark game. It’s a great chance for our communities to come together and raise money and awareness for a terrible disease that claims way too many young lives.”

A ‘meet and greet hockey fan night’ - for both the USA and Canada teams - will be held at Macquarie Ice Rink on July 16.

Meet the players, other NHL legends and even win some great prizes!
