Spice up your gym routine with cross training and discover the benefits of a whole body fitness program. COVERED. found out more about this holistic approach on offer at the fitness centre at Manly Andrew ‘Boy’ Charlton Aquatic Centre (MABC).

Mixing aerobic activity such as swimming, cycling or aerobics with strength training and either Yoga or Pilates, is the way to approach fitness. Using just one set of muscles repeatedly can increase your risk of repetitive injury.

That’s the message from Dan Skakavac, MABC Aquatic Centre Manager. “The more you train your body for just one activity, the more stress you put on all the muscles and bones that are used in that one activity. So, despite getting better at that one thing, the more you increase your risk of injury,” he explains.

Cardio is very important, especially for your heart, cholesterol, and blood pressure. And whether you choose to walk, cycle or run, you know that any exercise that increases your heart rate, helps kill the kilos. Swimming gives your body an excellent workout minus the harsh impacts. It can also help strengthen your lungs.

Dan says strength training is essential too. “It can slow the muscle loss that comes with age, build the strength of your muscles and connective tissues, increase bone density, cut your risk of injury and helps burn fat,” he adds.

He says the most overlooked component of cross training is flexibility training. “From a basic stretching regime to Yoga or Pilates, a greater range of motion is what you’re after.” Yoga helps increase general mobility and stability while Pilates strengthens core muscles and ensures a healthy posture, supporting the back and neck, freeing the joints and enhancing flexibility.

Benefits of Cross Training

  • Reduced risk of injury. Too much of one thing can put a lot of stress on certain parts of your body so mix it up! Spread the load.
  • Improved total fitness. The more varied the workout the more whole body fitness you will achieve.  Also helps prevent injury, increases bone density and controls body weight.
  • Flexibility. A full range of motion will help you move and reduce the risk of injury.
  • Sustainable fitness. A varied workout helps keep you positive and engaged, which means you’re more likely to workout.
