Manly Women’s Shelter is calling on the community to help raise $25,000 to increase homeless services on the peninsula.

The Manly Women’s Shelter 2017 Christmas Appeal hopes to boost funds for work that will create two extra beds for homeless women on the Northern Beaches.

The shelter currently houses 13 women at a time, with one bedroom being used for office space. Around $50,000 is needed to move the office and free the room up for use as another bedroom.

MYER has been a proud supporter of the Women’s Shelter, generously donating $25,000 towards the project. Manly Women’s Shelter is calling on the community to help raise the remaining $25,000.

“We currently provide 3,284 bed nights per year for women on the Northern Beaches who are homeless,” said Julia Lever, president of Manly Women’s Shelter.

“We have the opportunity to increase that to 5,475 beds but we need help from the community to achieve this.”

If the funds are raised, 15 women could be housed per night, following the renovations. Manly Women’s Shelter will work with local architect and sponsor MM+J Architects, local builders and tradespeople to complete the project.

More than 300 women on the Northern Beaches have sought refuge and support, benefiting from the shelter’s services. In 2016, the shelter supported 77 women, with a total of 3,284 bed nights.

Women seek shelter due to domestic violence, mental health reasons, financial hardship and drug and alcohol abuse.
