Behind The Smile
It can be hard to start conversations around mental health. Behind The Smile is a fundraising event held during mental health week, aiming to bring together the local community and help start these serious conversations. This event raises funds for the not-for-profit organisation, Australians for Mental Health, each member having personal experience with mental illness or loss of a loved one to suicide.
Behind The Smile will be held on October 14, 2017 at Dee Why RSL, sponsored by DYRSL and LJ Hooker Dee Why. There will be speakers including boxing champion Joe Williams, suicide survivor Bradley Spillane and more, sharing their experience with mental illness.
ABS statistics show that 45% of Australians experience mental ill health at some point in their life and two thirds of people had not accessed any services for treatment. Australians for Mental Health organisation has a vision for Mental Health Reform and are calling on the government and health services for the following actions and outcomes:
- Equality between mental healthcare and physical health care
- Increased access to services for those disadvantaged or facing social and cultural barriers from health care.
- Rights and humanity respected in care
- Expanded prevention and early intervention
Tickets cost $116.53 and include a two course dinner with beer, wine and soft drinks.
