As you walk in to Momo Bar’s Dee Why or Manly outposts, the senses are instantaneously assaulted. With the sounds of diners happily enjoying meals, the friendly team greeting every customer and the aromatic wafts of authentic Nepalese broth coming from the kitchen, Momo Bar is one culinary oasis you won’t want to leave.

The concept is the brainchild of husband and wife duo Archana and Damien Dellala, who after spending plenty of time in Nepal, decided to leave the corporate world and bring this exciting dining concept to the Northern Beaches, with their first Manly premises opening in March 2017.

The focal point of Momo Bar’s tasty offering is the culmination of two polarizing cuisines, Hawaiian and Nepalese. A bold move that has most certainly paid off. As Damien and Archana explained to me, people have fallen in love with the fusion concept and will often share some Nepalese momo for entree, before each savouring a Hawaiian poke bowl for main. Now that’s what you call a dream combo. But the team’s creativity doesn’t stop there. With the opening of their Dee Why store in December 2018, they have now launched one of Sydney’s most unique breakfast menus.

Ever heard of pokado? Or breakfast dumplings? Well, they’re two lip-smacking options set to send you into a food coma at Momo Bar Dee Why. Pokado fuses the uber-popular breakfast choice of smashed avo on toast with Momo Bar’s signature poke offerings including Build-Your-Own, Volcano, Vegan, Aloha and Tiki. The team have also brought ‘Breakfast Dumplings’ to the Dee Why villagers, and I have to say, they’ve nailed it. Any doubts I initially had in regard to this combination were instantaneously quashed as I savoured the Atlantic Salmon and Mushroom dumplings, garnished with Natural Yogurt to balance out the punchy flavour profile. They’ve also got a house made breakfast roti on the menu: with bacon, fried egg, avocado and chilli jam, they’re certainly onto a winner.

Don’t worry, they’ve got you covered for lunch and dinner too. Why not try one of their Poke bowls - the Volcano is our favourite. Boasting edamame beans, carrot, radish, tobiko (fish eggs), cucumber, red and green chillies and you’re choice of base, protein and souces, it’s one tasty bowl of goodness! Or, for the more adventurous type, build your own bowl, simply pick your base, protein, toppings and sauces and you’re sorted. Don’t forget some authentic Nepalese momo too. They’re made fresh to order, also giving you the ability to mix and match flavours such as Organic Lentil, Lamb, Pork or Mixed Vegetable.

Momo Bar has rapidly become a Northern Beaches institution since its inception in early 2017 and is certainly a concept that we believe will stand the test of time, with their constant evolution and plans for expansion.
We’re so lucky to have them on the beaches to fuel us with some delicious Momo, Poke or breakfast. •
