The Endless Summer Mindset
It’s officially winter and while the temperatures may be slowly starting to drop, the time for packing away the summer wardrobe hasn’t quite arrived... we’re not sure it ever does here on the Northern Beaches. It might be sub zero outside, but there’s still more than a few rocking thongs and shorts from The Corso to The Newport.
So how is it that the locals manage to inject a little bit of summer to their winter wardrobe and still look effortlessly cool? COVERED. sat down with local fashionista and Westfield Warringah Mall stylist Yasmin Afoa and asked her to give us the low down on dressing for winter, Northern Beaches style.
Yasmin’s love of fashion, her wearable aesthetic as a mother of three and her passion to help women express their most authentic selves through apparel makes her an expert in her field, particularly when it comes to the laid-back fashion that is so distinctly Northern Beaches. We asked Yasmin how locals can keep the summer vibe alive whilst embracing this season’s trends.
What do you love about Northern Beaches fashion? Northern Beaches fashion is easy, practical and relaxed – the Northern Beaches girl somehow manages to look a million dollars after she’s just thrown something on. The fashion is reflective of the lifestyle. No matter how cold it is, the beach is always a possibility.
So, what about you? What are you getting around in at the moment? I love the colder seasons because it allows me to be more creative with my outfits and gives me a feeling of European style. I’m loving my turtleneck and skivvy knits at the moment, pairing them with high waisted pants and animal print boots to complete the look. I’ll throw on a blazer for extra warmth if needed, dragging my summer style into winter.
What fashion labels do a great job of dragging summer into winter? sass & bide always do a great knit for the colder season, and they always bring in gorgeous dresses and skirts which are great layering options. They tend to experiment with bringing summer colours into their winter collections, which is refreshing and fun if you have a winter wedding or ball to attend. Another label I love is alice McCALL – their pieces are always so fun, and they continue to introduce pastel colours throughout winter. Their dresses and denim pieces are perfect teamed with quirky knits and boots.
What colours are you seeing come through for winter? I’m seeing plums and burgundies, copper and mustard, as well as magentas and crimson red. Cornflour blue is a big one too; also oatmeal shades of beige.
What are your must-have winter staples? You can’t go without a large coat and some black boots. Investing in a winter coat will see you many seasons to come, and camel is the colour to look for to last you through the years. Stay away from patterns and on-trend items and stick to investment colours like burgundy, black and grey. And if you are looking for styling tips, throw on a pair of jeans with a staple tee and pull on your camel coat and black boots... stylish, warm and fuss free.
And finally, can we continue to wear our denim shorts? On the warmer winter days... yes! Pair them with an oversized knit or trench coat, cross-body bag and a pair of styling joggers or ankle boots. Throw on a woollen scarf if you need that extra warmth. •
Sportsgirl - Burgundy Scarf
I love the colour of this scarf – don’t be afraid of colour in your winter wardrobe, a pop of vibrant colour is a welcome respite to the usual suspects like grey and black. Scarves are also perfect to throw on with your summer dresses and boots.
Country Road - Merino High Neck Sweater
I am seeing these neutral tones everywhere this season. Try this knit tucked in to any bottoms, be it jeans, a skirt or shorts – I promise it will look amazing.
David Jones - SABA Prudence
This coat is a great style if you’re not looking for anything big and bulky. It’s super warm and the colour is a gorgeous alternative to traditional winter colours. The lapels are your weapon for structure. Team the coat with a white t-shirt and a pair of denim shorts or jeans. Top off the look with the Rubi Shoes look-alike Alexander Wang boots, and if you’re feeling confident, throw on a brown belt to create a completely different look that will bring you in at the waist.
Oroton - Solo Mini Satchel Light Rust
Change your bag strap from summer to winter and then back again…so versatile and an affordable alternative to purchasing a new bag each season.
alice McCALL - Bluesy Jeans Indigo
Denim to die for at alice McCALL - so flattering! Team these jeans with anything and you immediately look like you know what you are doing with your wardrobe. Tuck in a knit or t-shirt... throw on a scarf and voila - instant vintage.
Cotton On - Rubi Shoes Spencer Studded Rand Boot
For a fraction of the price you will look like you are rocking the Alexander Wang Boots… the studs on the side give it that extra $$ look and they are a great heel height, so you can still do your running around looking fabulous. Wear them on warmer days with denim shorts and you will also look on point.
