Pregnancy and childbirth can take its toll on a woman’s body but further impact comes from caring for a newborn.

As new mum and owner of Hands On Health Care Clinic in Balgowlah, Georgina Smith, found out.

Georgina now knows first-hand the effects of having a baby following the birth of her son Harry in October last year. She told COVERED. how her own experiences have made her even more aware of the issues.

How has it impacted your posture - what effects have you noticed?
I’ve noticed that with the lack of abdominal strength combined with the breast feeding and sitting, I have become very rounded through the shoulders. I feel like I slouch more than ever. 

Is it just the pregnancy?
Harry is very heavy and I am constantly trying to shift my centre of gravity when holding him. I can often feel the pressure on my lower back, shoulders and neck. 

Are you surprised by the impact having a baby has had on you now?
No, we see these issue for young mums and dads regularly at the practice. I am taking my own advice and these are my top tips. 
•    Stretch your pecs and neck daily.
•    Be careful how much time you spend looking down at bub and phones when breast feeding.
•    Prop bub up on a pillow so you can sit straight on a supportive chair.
•    Lift the caspule and baby with your knees instead of bending your back.
•    Making sure cots and change tables are set up at a good height to reduce bending.
•    Be careful about carrying baby around on one hip sway regularly or use a baby carrier.

Mums frequently put themselves last and at Hands On Health Care we want to make sure mums take time out for themselves and look after their core strength and functionality. 

What does your clinic do to help mums?
We invite mums to bring their bubs to appointments with them. We have a carer in-house to look after the baby while we look after mum.

Do you recommend an adjustment after birth for mums?
We recommend mums get themselves assessed after the birth of their child.
