Letty's Booked In

Avalon’s Lliam ‘Letty’ Mortensen is looking forward to travelling the globe in 2017.  The stylish natural footer is booked into compete on the World Surf League Qualifying Series.

Global Surf Tag Guru Steve Harrison spoke to Letty about his injury and his battle back to a winning streak.

On top of chasing ratings points, the 20-year-old will also be hunting perfect waves in tropical locations for his next video edit that will showcase his amazing aerial skills.

After suffering a serious back injury while surfing at the start of the year that resulted in four months out of the water, Mortensen bounced back well with solid results on the European leg of the Qualifying Series.

He backed this up with a third place finish in the last event of the Bacardi Surf Tour at Curl Curl Beach in October.

Mortensen ended any chance of ratings leader Nic Squiers winning the tour, defeating the Wollongong powerhouse in Round 2 before going down to Bondi’s Perth Standlick in the Semi Finals.

“Pretty happy to finish third in my first Bacardi event,” said Mortensen. “To get an 8.67 and then not be able to get a mid range back up in the Semi was a bummer.

“The whole day was tricky conditions and you really just had to find those corners that were going to give you some opportunity.

“It was so cool to have guys like Matt Bemrose and ex CT surfer Dayyan Neve in the event, there’s so many good surfers doing these events so you really have to bring you’re A-Game. Next time I’d love to take the win,” he added.

Mortensen has put in plenty of hard work to be back surfing at full speed with his rehabilitation including physiotherapy with Vicki Locke and strength and conditioning training with Nic Laidlaw. He has also undergone pain relief treatments using the Physiokey device.
