Actor, writer and Northern Beaches good guy Richard Roxburgh has donated a very special auction item to this year’s Northern Beaches Women’s Shelter’s (NBWS) Gala Fundraiser: the voice of his beloved character, the incorrigible barrister-turned-unlikely (and unwilling) Senator Cleaver Greene, from the Tv Show Rake .

The winning bidder walks away with a never-to-be-repeated, personalised outgoing voicemail message with Roxburgh in character as Greene, offering a humorous explanation of the phone owner’s inability to take the call.

Online bidding is already open: NBWS is taking early bids ahead of the Saturday 25 May black-tie event at Manly Pavilion. Bidders can email businessmanager@nbws.org.au from now until the Gala.

With the fifth season of Rake being the series’ last, these may be the last words Clever Greene ever speaks.

The Shelter hopes this unique auction item appeals to Roxburgh’s legion of fans, including Australia’s well-heeled legal fraternity.

Asked who the ideal winner will be, NBWS President Rosy Sullivan quips, “Someone with a great sense of humour and deep pockets.”

She adds, “It’s a bit of fun, but the fundraising cause couldn’t be more serious. We’ve supported well over 400 homeless women since 2010 – 120 in 2018 alone. We’re a small community-funded charity and the Gala’s our cornerstone annual fundraiser.”

“We pitched the idea through Richard’s management and Richard personally replied the very next day,” says Sullivan. “Now I’m NBWS President and President of the Richard Roxburgh Fan Club too.”
