What happens when four Northern Beaches artists come together to
sketch on a weekly basis ?
Artist Evert Ploeg is no stranger to having his work hung in large galleries. Winner
of the Packing Room Prize and twice winner of The Archibald People’s Choice
Award – his work hangs in our nation’s finest art spaces. However, in between
portrait commissions, he had the idea of a small sketch group where the artists
could literally walk into the studio with minimal equipment and sketch in an honest
and relaxed style.
“Initially, my thought was to have a few friends sitting around, cup of coffee or glass
of wine in hand and more or less sketch into our little moleskin books. Simple, low
lighting and no easels – something very informal to the regular art class life drawing
And so “Monday Nights” was born. Evert was joined by fellow artists Petra Pinn and
Laurie McKern (owners and tutors of children’s art classes at “Gallery Cats Studios”
in Brookvale), and by former advertising designer/artist Jane Park– all bringing to
the sketch group their own unique and creative flavour.
“ Initially we were all sketching on random pieces of paper or sketch books – it was
all about enjoying the process really, “ continues Evert. “ But pretty soon we pooled
together a large body of work that we knew would make a great exhibition”.
The pieces in “Monday Nights” are a celebration of the female form and attitude.
Some pieces are of traditional nudes and some show the model in costume. There is
a sense of observation, playfulness and experimentation in the works that are result
of coming together, being relaxed, informal and immersed in the subdued intimate
studio environment. The pieces are small in nature, but accessible either as short
stand-alone studies or continued further into evolved artworks.
Varying in styles and approach, the sketch group is not only about creating and
exploring ideas as individual artists, but also achieving a sense of community and
artistic spirit, whilst celebrating the human form
Jane Park adds, “ in our forthcoming exhibition we will try to recreate that artist
atmosphere we have in Evert’s studio, with prop’s, drapery, an alluring live model
and fabulous music by local classical guitarist, Joseph Zarb”, further “On Saturday
29 th July we will be hosting a public life sketching session in the exhibition space
from 11am – 1pm, with bookings essential”.
All works in the exhibition will be available to purchase, both framed and unframed,
with prices starting at $100.
“Monday Nights” will be preview viewing from Wednesday July 25 th at The Creative
Space, 105 Abbott Rd, Curl Curl. Official Opening night Friday 27 th from 6pm – 8pm
