3 big days. 200+ big stallholders. 1 big design event. The Big Design Market is back for 2019! Australia’s premier shopping extravaganza is pulling out all the stops to make its fourth and biggest year in Sydney the most memorable yet. Relaunching at a stunning new location in the vibrant Barangaroo precinct – The Cutaway – The Big Design Market 2019 is for the foodies, the families, the dreamers, and all lovers of ethically made designer goods.
In the lead up to the festive season, The Big Design Market is the ultimate place to find exceptional gifts to delight every loved one. Boasting over 200 Australian stallholders, a heart-racing array of food and wine experiences, and a host of curated activities for attendees of all ages, the event is a joyful spectacular of shopping, eating, drinking, creating and playing – all under one roof.
From great Australian artists to limited-edition designer show bags, we really mean it when we say The Big Design Market has something for everyone. There is a major prize draw worth over $1800, as well as gourmet food, wine, craft beer and coffee, a huge kids’ area complete with jungle gym by Good Design Australia award-winners Funky Monkey Bars and free creative activities with Mulga the artist.
And that’s just the beginning. We have something really BIG in store for our Sydney visitors at the Cutaway this year. The Big Design Market will showcase the stunning work of South Australia’s most exciting emerging artist and jewellery designer, Maylin Evanochko of Mazdevallia, in the form of a breath-taking 45-metre printed mural covering one entire wall in vibrant colour. The installation will be on show for 3 days only and exclusive to The Big Design Market Sydney 2019.
“Without a doubt, 2019 is all about sustainability and innovation at The Big Design Market – from the food, to the fun, to the delights at every stall,” says Simon Obarzanek, director of The Big Design Market.
“For starters, we’ve got designers who want to make your every dining experience as friendly to the Earth as it is to your taste-buds, like Beetbox with their multi-use takeaway bowl (created by legendary Keep Cup co-founder Jaimie Forsyth), Rolla Bottle and their literally roll-up-able, reusable drink bottles, and Cutlery Carriage, with their completely colourful and very clever cutlery carriers. As for improving the rest of the ways we function in the day-to-day, Orbitkey are back with their ingeniously simple, life-streamlining key holders, Lekker Bikes are showcasing their beautiful electric cycles, and I am personally very excited to see the Lapod from Objct Co – a primo product that means no more hot laps or sore necks when you use your laptop. And food? I always say that design is my passion but food is a very close second. A couple of highlights for me this year from our amazing line up include Bar Pho, Fishbowl, Broomfield Pies (especially his trout and wasabi pie), Esti Garcia’s chocolates, Moo Brew beer, and also Willie Smith’s organic apple cider (and these last two guests are all the more illustrious at The Big Design Market for sailing across from Tassie to celebrate with us). And all of that is just the tip of the most delicious, exciting, colourful and uplifting iceberg you ever did see! I look forward to sharing every bit of it with Sydney this September at the Cutaway, Barangaroo.”
Year after year, The Big Design Market presents a consistently outstanding selection of premium design products. Whether it’s original home decor, fine food, organic beauty products, cutting-edge tech items, clever toys for curious kids, or any of the other ethically produced goods available, everything at The Big Design Market has been created by people who care about quality.
Because The Big Design Market is held just before the festive season, you can get an easy, enjoyable head-start on your Christmas shopping, and end-of-year gifts for teachers and colleagues. Holding the event in September means attendees can savour the process of choosing meaningful gifts without the stress of the Christmas rush.
Since The Big Design Market began in Melbourne in 2012, the event has become famous for delivering a peerless shopping, dining and entertainment experience to visitors across Australia. Numbering approximately 20,000 annually, guests to The Big Design Market know to expect a day full of all that is fresh, fun, innovative and uplifting.
Australian icons don’t get more iconic than Ken Done - the artist and designer we are to have as The Big Design Mentor 2019. As a key inspiration to generations of Australian creatives – and many of our designer stallholders – Ken shared his stories, reflections, and words of wisdom on running a creative business with five up-and-coming, illustration-based designers from The Big Design Market.
Sydney line-up: Cassie Byrnes of Variety Hour, Maylin Evanochko of Mazdevallia, Penny Ferguson of Min Pin, Esther Sandler of Togetherness Design, and Emily Green.
