Behind the Smile 2019 is an event not to be missed.
The media has done a pretty good job of raising awareness of mental illness, however equity of funding is not on par with that of physical health and there is a lack of treatment options. All funds raised will be going to the not-for-profit, grassroots organisation Australians for Mental Health. You can read more about them here
One in five Australians aged 16-85 suffer from mental ill health in any one year. Mental illness is the 3rd highest cause of disability in our country, and the rate of death by suicide is almost 3 times the road toll.
The people sharing their experience of mental illness at this years’ event are:
Kathy Kelly - One son was killed after an unprovoked and fatal attack at Sydney's Kings Cross. Four years later their younger son, took his own life. Both boys were 18 years old.
Andrew House - From being homeless and existing only for the next drug, Andrew is now an Alcohol and Other Drug Clinician with The Royal Flying Doctor Service based in Broken Hill.
Elisabeth Shaw - CEO Relationships Australia NSW
Elisabeth is a clinical and counselling psychologist with extensive experience in relationships services.
This powerful event is not to be missed! Real, raw and honest stories of lived experience of mental illness and suicide, to break stigma and bring hope. Funds raised for the not-for-profit organisation, Australians for Mental Health
