Bookings essential, costumes optional, but no lightsabers. Sorry.

Manly Art Gallery & Museum is to host a joint exhibition featuring the works of two of the most important figures in Australian art over the last 100 years.

The exhibition will be open 10am - 5pm Tuesday to Sunday, from May 3 to June 9.
Entry is free.

Arthur Murch (1902-1989) is among the most recognised Australian painters of the 20th Century and Jurgis Miksevicius (1923-2014) is an unsung hero of art who intentionally withdrew from the art world.

‘Keepers of The Flame: The Legacy of Murch & Miksevicius’ explores their art through the eyes of their daughters Michelle Murch and Carolyn Leigh, who manage their fathers’ archives and artworks.

MAGAM Senior Curator Katherine Roberts said the “exhibition is an absorbing - and at times emotional - voyage through the practicalities of managing the artistic legacies of their artist-fathers”.

“The artists’ daughters are bound to the artworks through love, respect and duty.

“Central to this exhibition are the personal and compelling stories told about these two fascinating artists by their daughters.

“The stories are conveyed through a carefully curated selection of drawings, paintings, photographs, memorabilia and a specially commissioned documentary film.”

Arthur Murch was born in Sydney, studied under Antonio Dattilo Rubbo and Rayner Hoff and worked with George Lambert.

A prolific painter, sculptor, designer and teacher, Murch experimented with many styles and materials.

This exhibition features his portrait of Bonar Dunlop which won the Archibald Prize in 1949, his iconic figure study ‘Leda and the Swan’ (1960) and the pointillist masterpiece ‘Fisherman’s Daughter’ (1950).

Jurgis Miksevicius (1923-2014) was a Lithuanian émigré to Australia, arriving here as a refugee in 1948.

His family had fled initially to Germany to escape the Soviet invasion of Lithuania at the end of World War Two. He studied Architecture and Fine Arts in Darmstadt, Germany.

His artistic roots were in European art and Bauhaus principles which formed the foundation of his practice as an artist in Australia and a career spanning across seven decades.

Miksevicius’ work is represented in the National Gallery of Australia, the Lithuanian Art Museum and national and international private collections.

Despite years of sustained involvement within the Australian art scene, Miksevicius chose to withdraw from this sphere in the early 1960s.

One consequence of this was that Miksevicius never received the recognition his worth deserved.

‘Keepers of The Flame: The Legacy of Murch & Miksevicius’ will be opened by eminent art critic Christopher Allen at Manly Art Gallery & Museum on Saturday 4 May, 2 - 4pm.

Michelle and Carolyn will be joined by other ‘Keepers of the Flame’, Cassi Plate (Carl Plate) and Meg Stewart (Margaret Coen), in conversation with Katrina Strickland, author of Affairs of the Art and editor of Good Weekend, about living with artists’ legacies.

Exhibition Talk // Sunday June 2, 3-4pm.
Michelle Murch and Carolyn Leigh share the stories of Arthur Murch and Jurgis Miksevicius as told through the artworks in the exhibition and archives.

JOIN WINEMAKER DAVID BICKNELL WHEN HE PRESENTS A NIGHT OF AMAZING FOOD PAIRED WITH OAKRIDGE PREMIUM WINES

When: Tuesday 4th June 2019 at 7pm

“David Bicknell is an exceptionally gifted winemaker who exemplifies all that is admirable about the movers and shakers of Australia’s wine artisans” -James Halliday, The Weekend Australian Magazine, January 2017

David has spent years cultivating a deep understanding of the subtleties of the Yarra Valley’s terroirs, and it’s evident in every sip. His winemaking harnesses all the intricacies of viticulture, from the soil and its microorganisms, to sustainable farming practices – he even considers the type of music played during vinification.

Oakridge’s grapes are sourced from the on-site vines as well as carefully selected vineyards throughout the Yarra Valley. These grapes are treated with traditional techniques and minimal intervention, creating wines that express both their varietal characteristics and those of their specific terroir.

TRANSITIONS - Solo exhibition by MIGUEL GONZALEZ

TRANSITIONS - Solo exhibition by MIGUEL GONZALEZ

unnamed (1).jpg

By definition, a transition is the process of changing from one state or condition to another. It is an element in between that could be measured with time and distance. It could last the snap of fingers or it could be a 6 metres long hallway.

For Miguel “Transitions” talks about elements and circumstances that helped throughout his process of changes during six years of adapting from one environment to a new nationality. Things that made the hardest and most difficult moments into subtle and gentle instants. These can be shown as hands that connect with each other representing support and strength, partnerships and community.

It is also shown through the use of colours and abstract elements that connect all the pieces together. Some of them representing different situations or actions that helped him overcome inevitable traumas during his transition.

Miguel also experiments with gradients between strong hues over dark colours, as symbols of protest and awareness of the current crisis that faces his home country Venezuela. A country submerged in the darkness of the regime, isolated and now literally in darkness for lack of energy all around.

Desperation and frustration, became the common for every Venezuelan living inside and outside the country, in different levels, but all connected by the same feelings. Colours, gradients and shapes over dark spaces suggest that there is always a light at the end of the tunnel.

Bio – Miguel Gonzalez (M-Lon)

Miguel Gonzalez [AKA: M-Lon] Australian artist, born in Venezuela, currently based in Sydney’s Northern Beaches. With a background in architecture and more than 10 years practise with his own studio in Caracas, he decided to follow his other passion once he arrived in Sydney: becoming a full-time artist and illustrator. This gave him the opportunity to try new formats focusing in the creation of murals for private clients as well as corporate and institutional projects, creating artworks indoors and outdoors.

Miguel has been part of national and international collective and solo exhibitions, as well as participating in important art fairs. Co-founder and director of La Crème Creative Inc. (not for profit creative community & co-working space) and co-founder of Kayapa Creative Studio (art & design projects).

The Lifeline Classic 2019

lifelineclassic.jpg

Having struck a chord with the community over the past two years, the Lifeline Classic will be returning to the Northern Beaches in April. Bigger and more relevant than ever, this year we’re aiming to break our fundraising record for suicide prevention, and set ourselves a new benchmark.

With eight Australians attempting suicide every hour, and eight suicides occurring on our shores every single day, this is an issue that needs Australia’s attention. We need your support to reduce these sobering statistics.

Keen to get involved? Here’s what to do.

The Lifeline Classic is a ‘tag team’ surfing comp – but it’s also a fundraising challenge. If you want to take part, start by rounding up a team of four surfers. Then, it’s up to your team to raise as many donations as possible (in past years, the goal has been $5,000 per team, so why not see if you can beat this?).

On the day, we introduce all teams to a line-up of guest pro surfers who will join your teams. The team that’s raised the most money will have first pick of pros – so if you want to compete alongside your number one legend, get your fundraising cap on!

Limited spots are available, so register your team today!

If you're not in the surf, you can support Lifeline's work by donating to one of the teams who are competing in the Lifeline Classic.
