freestocks-org-487553-unsplash.jpg

There’s something extra special coming up for the Forestville community this November, with a series of free family friendly events at the local shopping area “The Centre”.

Northern Beaches Mayor Michael Regan is encouraging locals to do something different mid-week while supporting local businesses and enjoying the longer days and warmer evenings.

“You’ll expect to find great business offers such as store discounts and dinner meal specials on offer during the night, live music, outdoor games like giant Jenga, face painting and more.

“Council created this event in direct response to feedback we received from the community through a place score - a survey of what residents believe is most important in a town centre. This showed people in Forestville wanted activities in the evening so we’ve listened and organised this event.”

The event will only run for four weeks from 5:30-8:30pm on Thursday 8, 15, 22, 29 November 2018.

Some of the great offers from local businesses include:

Energize Health - Trainers outside offering training specials and promo gear.

ABC Kids Paradise - 10% off storewide between 5pm-8pm. Up to 50% off selected items.

Jetts - Complimentary 15-30 minute fitness sessions for non-members. $0 joining fee for anyone who mentions 'Spring Nights'.

Old English Fish N' Chips - $10 dollar Fish, Chips and Calamari meal deal. The meal will include our famous Fish n’ Chips, plus 2 mouth-watering calamari rings plus tarter sauce, lemon and a can of drink (or water).

Forest Brunch Bar - Traditional Greek menu for the event ‘Spring nights on the Greek Islands’.

Vintage Cellars - Free in-store wine tasting.

Kennedys Boutique - Extended trading hours until 8:30pm.

CoccoRocco Deli -  Special Deli Grazing Boards menu, delicious ‘charcuterie’ cold cuts sliced fresh with all the accompaniments.

F45 Forestville – Train for free on Thursday nights during the event. Attend the 5:45pm or 6:45pm class. Make sure you remember to bring a bottle of water and a towel. Must be over 16 years old.

They encourage you to take whatever you NEED from the other visitors, there are no vouchers and there is no swapping 5 for 5 for example. Any surplus clothes will be donated to a local charity.

If you do want to bring along items please ensure they are:
A) Clean
B) Still in a usable condition
C) Not stained or threadbare
D) Clothes, accessories and footwear

'Sense of Place' Exhibition at Sydney Road Gallery

Jessica Watts

Sought-after Sydney artist, Jessica Watts, presents her latest solo exhibition, ‘Sense of Place’, where she will display paintings and sculptures that explore a feminine ecosystem.

Running from November 22 to December 16 at Sydney Road Gallery, Ms Watts takes gender clichés and re-appropriates them into positive and empowering pieces of art.  The paintings are directly inspired by her collection of vintage wallpapers.

“The idea of re-appropriation isn’t new but the process of repurposing a stereotype and turning negative ideas into positive parts of our own identity is powerful,” said Ms Watts.

“The act of claiming an identity can be transformational. I often refer to my paintings as ‘Wallflowers’, and perhaps this is why they have been so well received as it reflects what we see in ourselves.”

Ms Watts’ multi-layered paintings possess a meditative quality. The repetitive working and reworking of her themes of wallpaper, the female body, flowers, and birds is like a personal mantra.

Ms Watts has been commissioned to paint a mural inside the new Three Beans Café, part of the Dee Why Town Centre redevelopment, also opening this November.

Ms Watts exhibits extensively in Australia and Japan. This is her only solo show in Sydney this year.

Sydney Sparkle Strut 2jpg.jpeg

Acclaimed Sydney artist and Archibald finalist Mia Oatley is exhibiting her new series of landscape paintings entitled ‘Sydney Sparkle Strut’ at Stockland’s Shopping Centre Balgowlah from the 5th - 11th November.

Oatley’s richly worked oil paintings and drawings pay homage to Sydney’s breathtaking coastline, including some of the Northern Beaches’ best loved weekend hangouts including Little Manly, Shelly and Balmoral Beach.

The choice to exhibit in a pop up gallery at the front entrance of busy Stockland’s Shopping Centre, near the artist’s home was very deliberate - “making art accessible has always been a mantra for me,” Oatley says.

“Particularly for people who are interested in owning a quality piece of artwork but find it hard to find the time to visit galleries”.

The artworks will be offered for pre-sale over the next few months on Mia’s instagram page - with some of the larger pieces from the show already snapped up by astute buyers.

According to Stockland’s management Mia’s exhibition will be the first of its kind, with Mia looking forward to surprising and delighting her art audience and shoppers alike.

Join thousands of Francophones and Francophiles from Sydney and surrounding areas at Killarney Heights Public School’s oval for a great day of food, fashion, homewares, small vintage furniture, a historical re-enactment, music and rides, at the 14th annual French Market.

This year, the 1er d’Artillerie de La Marine Inc., a French naval artillery re-enactment group, will delight visitors with full Napoleonic uniforms and engaging historical displays. They will join 60+ stalls of professional merchants selling French items such as saucissons, foie-gras, pâtés and other terrines; macarons, croissants, baguettes; French cheeses; books, magazines, DVDs and Blu-Rays in French language; jewellery and fashion accessories inspired by French culture; French vintage small furniture and poster reproductions, and so on.

This, all while listening to some French music in the background. Rides, games and face painting will enchant the younger crowd. It promises to be a fabulous social or family outing!

The market attracts an estimated 7000 visitors per year, with everything raising funds for the French-English bilingual program at the school.

Entry is free - although a $2 donation per adult would be appreciated and would go towards helping in financing the French-English Bilingual Program at the school.

FigurativelySpeaking

The Sydney Chamber Music Festival 2018 presents

‘Figuratively Speaking’

This year, the Sydney Chamber Music Festival will present music in relation to the fascinating art works of Australian artist Robert Dickerson AO (30 March 1924 – 18 October 2015).

Known as a figurative painter, Dickerson’s works are inspired by people and scenes and are often described as melancholy with isolated figures, menacing dark streetscapes and anguished facial expressions characterising his painting. This opens up a huge realm of music which SCMF Artistic Director, Bridget Bolliger, is delighted to curate alongside a line up of outstanding artists, as always!

For the first time in a decade, the Sydney Chamber Music Festival has received recognition and support and this comes from the Australian Elizabethan Theatre Trust (AETT).
The AETT supports the arts in Australia and has done so for over 60 years by providing financial assistance to individual artists, groups and companies.

Thanks to the AETT, our festival can realise it’s full potential, offering 5 outstanding concert programs which remain accessible to all.
